About Me

Hello and Welcome to my Blog!

I am currently a freshman at the American College of Thessaloniki (ACT) in Thessaloniki, Greece. I am here in Greece studying abroad from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts where I am majoring in Biology.

The Purpose of My Blog

As one of my classes this semester, I am taking Ecology. I really enjoy sciences; so, I hope this course will quench my thirst for science this semester! For the class, each student is creating a blog to reflect upon discussions during class and issues in the environment.

My Origin

I was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee in the United States.  It is a city, though it is not like other major cities (i.e. New York and Chicago). I would consider it urban, but I do not live in an urban area. My neighborhood is away from downtown and it is surrounded with many trees and parks. Demographically Memphis is very flat, however there is one major river, the Mississippi River. The climate varies with each season.  I would say Memphis has four seasons with: a flowery and pleasant spring, a hot and humid summer, a cool and breezy fall, a cold yet mild winter. For the most part, I really enjoy  my town because it has array of weather options and a variety of parts (Midtown, Downtown, East Memphis) and suburbs making it always interesting to explore.

Environmental News in Memphis

One of the major geographical landmarks near Memphis is the Mississippi River. On the twenty seventh of July there was an accident concerning the river. A barge going North was hit by a tugboat going South. Inside the barge was 5000 gallons of acrylonitrile. (a flammable and toxic chemical used in making plastic). There was a hole the size of a softball; however, the amount of chemical released into the water is unknown. The U.S. Coast Guard closed down several miles of the river. Though, the effect on corn and soybean shipments was minimal. Even though the damage was not as devastating as it could have been, this accident could have been avoided if there was more traffic control along the river.
